Following the 8 June 2008 earthquake near Patras, Greece, C&EE Professor
Jonathan Stewart and researchers from the University of Patras as well as the Institute of Engineering Seismology and Earthquake Engineering in Thessalonki performed reconnaissance of seismological, geotechnical, and structural aspects of the earthquake effects. The results are summarized in a report recently published on the Geo-Engineering Earthquake
Reconnaissance (GEER) web site at
http://research.eerc.berkeley.edu/projects/GEER/Post_EQ_Reports.html.
Topics discussed include the geographic limits of strike-slip faulting (apparently influenced by bounding normal faults), ground motion
characteristics, surface fault rupture (lack thereof), landslides and rockfalls, performance of structures and geo-structures, liquefaction and coastal subsidence, and performance of port and harbor facilities.
