My research interests include the analysis and design of buildings for earthquake and wind loading. I am especially active in the areas of design of tall buildings, reinforced masonry buildings, seismic strengthening of existing and historic buildings, and seismic risk. Research and design approaches involve probabilistic methods, reliability theory, and the theory of linear and nonlinear structural dynamics.
A major component of my most recent research is the evaluation of strengthening of existing structures for the earthquake hazard. In this area I have developed analytical and design methods for use of base isolators, dampers and composites for seismic s trengthening. I have also been very active with the Los Angeles City Special Committees on Reinforced Concrete Buildings and Steel Building after the Northridge earthquake. I currently serve as the editor of International Journal on the Structural Design of Tall Buildings.
