| | My research interests are geotechnical earthquake engineering, geophysical imaging, data acquisition and signal processing, and numerical analysis. My current research projects are: (1) developing fragility functions for bridges in liquefied and laterally spreading ground, (2) developing design guidelines for pile foundations in liquefied ground, (3) evaluation of the seismic levee deformation by destructive cyclic field testing, (4) centrifuge modeling of the large-strain site response behavior of soft clays, (5) CPT-based ultrasonic imaging of jet grout columns, and (6) developing correlations between shear wave velocity and penetration resistance at Caltrans bridge sites. |

| | I strive to make my courses exciting and challenging for students. I utilize data from real-world engineering projects in my courses, which challenges students to handle the uncertainties and heterogeneities that exist in geologic materials that are often neglected in overly-simplified classroom assignments. I devote considerable one-on-one effort to each student, often holding meetings outside of my scheduled office hours. I realize that different students adopt different approaches to learning and I do my best to vary my lecturing style to accommodate. |
