Faculty Recruitment

Faculty Position in Civil and Environmental Engineering at UCLA

The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in either the Environmental Microbiology/Biotechnology area or the Structural Engineering area. The position is open at all levels.  All candidates must hold an earned doctorate degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field and demonstrate exceptional promise for high-quality teaching, research, and professional development. A tenured appointment will be considered for candidates with a recognized record of exceptional achievement. Candidates will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, developing and sustaining an extramurally funded sponsored research program, and participating in multi-disciplinary research efforts.

Competitive applicants for the structural engineering position will have a demonstrated record of excellence in one or more of the following areas: (a) mechanics and design of micro/nano structured materials for engineering structures, (b) modeling of material microstructures and their connection to nano-, meso-, and macro-scale structural behavior,  (c) development and use of innovative systems and materials to improve the performance of structures subjected to natural or other hazards; (d) development of innovative approaches for evaluation and design incorporating performance-based design methodologies and structural reliability; (e) structural health monitoring; (f) and field and laboratory testing at nano-, meso-, and macro-scales, including the integration of test results with multiscale numerical modeling.

Competitive applicants for the environmental microbiology and biotechnology position will have a demonstrated record of excellence in one or more of the following areas: (a) development and application of molecular biology tools to characterize and understand planktonic and biofilm bacteria in engineered and natural environmental systems; (b) modifying or optimizing biological processes to improve the performance of wastewater treatment or contaminant remediation systems; (c) developing biologically-based chemical and pathogen sensors or pathogen source tracking methodologies; (d) exploring the use of biological processes to reduce energy demand and carbon production in wastewater treatment plants; or (e) exploring production of biogas, biofuels, or biologically derived renewable energy.

The Department houses well equipped laboratories and Department faculty participate in a number of centers, including the NSF Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation Equipment Site for Field Testing and Monitoring of Structural Performance, the NSF Center for Embedded Networked Sensing, the NSF/EPA UC Center for Environmental Impacts of Nanotechnology, the California NanoSystems Institute, and the UCLA Water Technology Research Center.

Formal screening has commenced, and applications will continue to be accepted until the postion is filled. Assistant and Associate Professor level applicants must submit a curriculum vita, full contact information for five references, and a two-page teaching and research plan.  Full Professor level applicants need only submit a CV.  The University of California, Los Angeles and the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering are interested in candidates who are committed to the highest standards of scholarship and professional activities, and to the development of a campus climate that supports equality and diversity. Newsletter Editor

The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering seeks a part-time editor to work on a series of projects assigned by the department chair.  Excellent writing and editing skills are required, including the ability to convey complex engineering ideas, concepts and methods to a more general readership.  The desired candidate must be deadline-oriented and possess the flexibility to perform successfully in both unsupervised and collaborative contexts.

The desired candidate also must be proficient with Adobe InDesign or equivalent desktop publishing software.  Proficiency with Adobe Photoshop and other applications in the Adobe Creative Suite is preferred.

A primary responsibility of the position entails writing, editing and designing the department’s newsletter, published twice per year.  The newsletter is a key tool for enhancing the department’s national profile.  In this capacity and in consultation with the department chair, the editor will: 1) solicit and gather newsworthy information from faculty and student groups; 2) develop and write a feature article focusing on one faculty member’s research; 3) assemble articles, photos and graphics into the newsletter space; and 4) coordinate printing with an outside professional printing company under a budget constraint.  Candidates are encouraged to visit http://cee.ucla.edu/cgi-bin/newsletters.php to view electronic versions of recent newsletters.

The editor will coordinate with and promote newsletter material and other newsworthy items (as they arise) to the engineering school’s External Affairs office in an effort to secure coverage in UCLA Engineer magazine, the dean’s monthly e-bulletin, and a variety of publications and media outlets both within and outside the UCLA community.

The editor will work with staff and faculty in updating the department brochure and other official communications output, as well as collaborate with the webmaster in continually updating and upgrading the department web site.

The position typically will require a commitment of 10-15 hours per week, but with the expectation that a much greater weekly time commitment will be required in order to complete twice-per-year newsletter projects under an assigned deadline.

Interested candidates should contact Karl Holmes kholmes@ea.ucla.edu and be prepared to submit writing and design samples.

The University of California is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply, including minorities and women.
